This paper helps bring industrial relations into focus by emphasizing explicit models and explicit objectives of the employment relationship. An analytical framework is presented that is based on four models of the labor market and employment relationship—the egoist, unitarist, pluralist, and critical employment relationships—and three objectives—efficiency, equity, and voice. The importance of this framework for understanding central issues in the new work of work, organizations, and employment will are demonstrated through its application to labor law and public policies on work, employee voice mechanism s, and human resource management practices.
